How to Prepare For the Adult Circumcision Surgery

Before you opt for a circumcision surgery, you need to learn how you can prepare for it, in order to ensure that everything goes smoothly. Adult circumcision surgery is not a major one. Parents choose this common procedure for their male boys when they are a day old or infants.

However, today, circumcision is now a rising practice among teenagers and adult men (1). Circumcision surgery is an outpatient procedure, where experts remove the skin that covers the tip or head of the penis. This excess, loose skin is what refers to as the “foreskin.”

Your surgeon during the surgical procedure will push the loose foreskin away from the head of the p***s. He or she will then trim the skin and use medical sutures to sew the edges. For this, your surgeon may use a number of ways to achieve this.

It could be that you opt for the procedure because you aren’t able to roll the foreskin back, (a condition called phimosis). It may be that you need the surgery because the foreskin remains stuck behind the head of the p***s (paraphimosis). After the surgery, these problems will go away.

Before the surgery, it is important that men understand what goes on in the surgery, along with the associated risks, options, and benefits. Before undergoing the procedure, you need to ensure a number of things to be prepared and fully ready.

Preparing for the Procedure of Adult Circumcision Surgery

  • You must understand exactly what the surgery will include, along with the benefits, risks, and other options.
  • You need to inform your Circumcision Center doctor about all the natural products and medicines you take. Some of these may also increase your risks of bleeding and slow response to the anesthesia.
  • In case you are taking blood thinners like Clopidogrel, warfarin, or aspirin consult your doctor. They will inform you of when you should stop the intake of these medicines before the procedure. At this stage, make sure you are aware of the things your doctor or surgeon wants you to do.
  • Avoid drinking or eating anything for at least 6 hours before your surgery. However, beforehand, you can take a few sips of water. This is for patients who choose general anesthesia.
  • Shave and clean the pubic area. Adult men should also bring a pair of tight briefs, which they can wear afterward to keep the surgical dressing in the right place. Until the soreness and swelling subsides, continue to wear these.
  • You should arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery. If you have a general anesthetic, this is important, but less with local anesthesia. It is always a good idea that you check with your insurance company that your costs will cover the insurance if you drive home!
  • Are you a smoker? If you are, then you need to stop it a few weeks before the surgery as it interferes with the healing of the incision. It slows down the recovery and may cause unexpected bleeding from the incisions.
  • For at least 48 hours before your surgery, you need to stop the intake of alcohol. Know that alcohol consumption could reduce the anesthesia’s effectiveness and dehydrate you.
  • You will need to take a week off from work to allow healing.

After the Surgery

After the adult circumcision surgery, you will not need to take your time off, unless it is necessary. You will experience discomfort and pain for the first few days. The surgery will help to keep health problems away like balanitis, phimosis, and reduces the risks of HIV infection (2) in adult men.

Make sure that you also avoid any form of strenuous activities, do not lift heavy objects, and give yourself some rest post-operation. After the surgery, you will also be able to implement proper hygiene without worrying about bacterial infections or the risk of penis-related problems.

Possible Risks of the Circumcision Surgery

Similar to other surgical procedures, even adult circumcision surgery comes with some risks. However, rest assured that these risks are quite low. The problems that may tag along with the circumcision surgery include:

    • Irritation of the glans
    • Pain
    • Risks of injury
    • Risks of unexpected bleeding
    • Increased risks of inflammation of the penis opening (mastitis)

Circumcision in men is a common surgical practice today across countries like the USA, Africa, and others. Although it is a culture and practice in different countries, men in the USA and other countries also turn to this procedure due to personal reasons.

For some, it’s more about maintaining a neat appearance for their partners, whereas others may opt for it to reduce the risks of health problems as well as keep away problems like penile cancer (3).

If you are planning to opt for this surgery, make sure you consult your circumcision doctor before adult circumcision surgery, ask him or her all your questions, clear your doubts and then decide on whether to cut or not cut.
